School of Midwifery.
The school of midwifery UNTH was founded in the year 1977 for the training of midwives who have been registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) as Nurses.

The school of midwifery UNTH was founded in the year 1977 for the training of midwives who have been registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) as Nurses.
The training is now 18 months duration spanning three (3) semesters, which usually starts September each year.
Admission is open to all registered nurses who have five credits in the basic Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, English and Mathematics.
From inception in 1977, the school has had a total admission of one thousand and eighteen (1018) students and graduated nine hundred and eighty (980).

To have a school that is the flagship of institutions of its kind worldwide where professional, competent and versatile midwifery practitioners are produced, who are capable of providing quality health care to mothers, families, communities and hospital in every Health Facility within Nigeria and globally.

By 2015, we hope to have well-equipped institution that is conducive for the training of competent midwifery practitioners who are capable of providing quality care to clients in all settings.


  1. To produce professionally competent midwifery practitioners capable of assessing, planning and implementing reproductive health services to individuals and expectant families in the homes, health centres, hospitals both within Nigeria and globally. 
  2. To supervise and manage other human and material resources in the rural health facilities.
  3. To plan and implement safe materials and child welfare services in the community.

Change in Curriculum:
The old Midwifery Curriculum was in use from 1977-1988 with the programme running for 12 (twelve) months. A new curriculum was implemented from 1988-2005 still running for 12 (twelve) months.
Presently, a revised new curriculum of 18 (eighteen) months which took effect from September 2006 is in use.

The school which was formerly housed in a wooden prefabricated building has been relocated to permanent structure in the old site of U.N.T.H Ituku/Ozalla. The school compromise of 2 large classrooms, a conference hall, practice room, well equipped library common room, staff office and other amenities.

Academic performance
The school has maintained an enviable academic record over the past years. In last final qualifying examination for midwives the students performed creditably.
Thirty-seven (37) students entered for the examination and thirty-six (36) students were successful with the percentage of 97.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council recently awarded the school a plaque for outstanding performance in academics.

The school was granted Provisional Accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and forthwith embargo on admission of new students was lifted temporarily  with effect from July 2009.
However a six (6) monthly progress report is to be submitted and is due for submission by January 2010.We thank Management immensely for their support towards these achievements.
