BACK-GROUND

The relevance of School of Health Information Management in a Teaching Hospital like University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu designated as the National Centre of Excellence in Cardio-Vascular diseases cannot be over-emphasised.

Following the report of a committee headed by Prof. C. N. Obionu for the establishment of the School and the successful accreditation carried out by the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria, the School commenced in 2001/2002 academic year with initial intake of 25 students drawn from different parts of the Federation.  The School was established with the co-operation and the full support of the then Chief Medical Director, Prof. B. A. N. Nwakoby to Mr. F. O,. Amadi who was the first Course-Co-ordinator of the School.
The School started with Part I of the programme leading to National Diploma of the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria.  The Board was established by Decree 39 of 1989 as statutory professional body to regulate the practice of Health Records in the country as well as training of the desired manpower in Health Information Management.
The prospective candidates must possess minimum entry qualification of senior Secondary School Certificate with credits in five subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics and Biology/Health Science.
The advertisement for new students takes place April/May of every year and the application form is sold within that period.

                The School has produced trained staff that are qualified to work in Health Institutions as Technicians.  As the re-accreditation of the School has been fixed for 16th and 17th December, 2010, it is expected that the School will be upgraded to Higher National Diploma awarding Institution with effect from next academic session
